What is Expressive Arts?
Expressive Arts Therapy is Art Therapy however, more than one form of artistic expression is used to access emotions, perceptions, and beliefs.  In an art therapy session, a therapist will use painting.  In a dance therapy session, a therapist will use dance.  With Expressive Arts we may utilize movement/dance AND drawing AND writing AND collage. We are not limited to one form of expression. The journey through the different modalities (painting, writing, movement) takes a person deeper into the inner realms of imagination and body.  The imagination is a great tool. Through the imagination we may access our feelings and perceptions. We use the imagination for manifesting what we desire, to travel into higher states of consciousness, and to heal.
Why does Expressive Arts work?
First it is important to state, no experience with art making is necessary. The emphasis in on process and self-discovery, not product.
Expressive Arts is effective when we give ourselves permission to play.    In the spirit of play, we explore where we limit ourselves, and where we allow ourselves to expand.  We share our stories and listen to others. Being witnessed and witnessing others is empowering and offers numerous gifts. Sometimes the gift is sense of relief, peace or self-confidence. Sometimes the gift is a feeling of freedom, inner strength or joy!
